Tips from the food network!

So while I was searching for restaurants in Atlanta off of the food network's show Diners, drive-ins, and dive, I came across the article "Be a healthier summer host." The article was extremely interesting to me because it is about how to choose lower calories foods (more reliable than my earlier post about BBqs!) and also how to cook and assemble the meals while keeping abundant flavor! Here are the tips I would like to share with you:

Burgers

"Fatty cuts of meat are high in saturated fat and cholesterol (not so good for the old ticker). Leaner alternatives — 90 to 95 percent lean ground beef, chicken or turkey breast, bison and fish — make equally satisfying burgers. Jazz up lower-fat meats with herbs and spices, and add moisture to the patties with chopped onion and mushrooms or a tangy sauce.

If you love cheese and mayo, consider low-fat versions and opt for one, not both. Cheeseburger fans: Try topping your burger with a little bit of strong cheese for a burst of flavor without the high-calorie cost. Sliced avocado makes a creamy addition to a burger and offers less saturated fat and cholesterol than traditional mayo.

Then, don't forget to pile on the fresh vegetables like ripe tomatoes, onion, spinach, lettuce and cucumbers. Even with a smaller burger, you’ll still feel full with loads of fiber-rich veggies."

Grilling meats

"Poultry: Skinless, white-meat chicken or turkey; ground turkey breast
Beef: Flank steak, top loin, sirloin, porterhouse, T-bone steak and tenderloin; 90% lean ground beef
Pork: Pork chops or tenderloin
Lamb: Look for the word 'loin'"

The article further talks about how to lower calories in pasta salad by decreasing the mayonnaise and replacing it with lower portions of low fat mayonnaise or by adding oil. Also increase the vegetable ratio to pasta and opt for whole grain pasta which adds an increase of fiber. For dessert grill pineapples with cinnamon seasoning! I havn't tried cooking any of these options yet besides bonless skinless chicken but I'm just starting out! Goodluck and have a great cookout!

Tips from InStyle!

So at my trip to Publix today (to buy some extremely unhealthy food) I impulse purchased an InStyle magazine. While I was going through it I came across an article called "10 ways to look great in a bikini." In this article I found some interesting and helpful nutrition facts I would like to share with you all!
1. In order to get rid of bloat: "Scale back on carbs and salty foods for two to three days before you slip into a bikini, says NYC nutritionist Cynthia Sass. Also replace gas-producing vegetables like beans, onions and broccoli with cooked asparagus, spinach, celery and tomatoes, which are diuretics. Double your bloat-reducing efforts by taking supplements that include natural ingredients like seeds and green clay, which minimize gas."
2. Coconut oil can increase your metabolism!!: "The pressed white meat of the fruit produces coconut oil, a unique saturated fat, that actually increases calorie burning. It's made of medium high chain triglycerides instead of long chains, making it easier to digest, explains Bruce Fife of the coconut research center, studies show that after eating a meal containing these medium chain triglycerides, metabolism can increase 48%. The sweet-tasting oil is great for searing seafood or as a butter substitute in baking."

These are the reasons why nutrition is so interesting!! We really are what we eat!

The New Spicy Chicken Sandwhich

So yes the Chickfila Spicy chicken sandwich is out and already a popular choice! I had my first sandwich today and it was literally like i was dreaming it was sooo good! If you have ever had the spicy chicken sandwich from Wendys its like that but better because its chickfila chicken! The only downfall (as well as in all fast foods) the spicy sandwich is around 490 calories and that is not including the french fries and the drink.. so if your watching your weight, then I would definitely keep this wonder to a minimum! On the other hand I do recommend tasting it because it was so yummy!

Hey yall! Sars and our friends are having a barbeque tonight with all our friends for memorial day! In my opinion, it is extremely hard to avoid eating unhealthy at a barbeque let alone a party, however it is possible! It is okay to indulge yourself every now and then, but if you're wanting to stay more on the lighter side, I would recommend drinking a full glass of water before your meals and continuously sipping on it throughout the night! This keeps your stomach fuller so you wont feel the need to eat more and your constantly keeping your mouth busy! If water doesn't keep your mouth occupied and you need a little more flavor, head toward the veggie tray but be aware that veggie dip can be high in fat intake so use sparingly! Have a great and healthy memorial day everyone!
